LAP stands for Leader & Parliamentarian, a zone level Training program organised by JCI.
LAP 2009 was organized by JCI Sambhalpur city on 14th and 15th March 2009. The Programme was hosted at Harjit Residency Sambhalpur. New Participants and new faces arrived by 14th morning and the programme was scheduled at 8:00 AM in the morning. Everyone was on time. We had our breakfast at 8 AM. The venue where the training programme was going to be held was occupied by participants at 9 AM. Every one's heart was beating out loud as it was a complete new experience where every face was new with new opportunity of mingling together. The Trainers for the programme were Zakir Hussain sir, Anil Sir and Jagdish Sir.
I had heard a lot about Zakir Sir but it was the first time we were meeting. It was a great experience. A great and Knowledgeable person with a great sense of humor. His first sight moved me a lot. I have become his fan. He started the session with great enthusiasm. We all got swayed in it. Anil Sir taught us how to bring rains in the hall in the absence of Clouds. Wow great one finger clapping than two fingers and then three, four and five and the sound which came was really amazing.
After introductory session the Programme of "leader and Parliamentarian" started. It started with the definition of Leader and how he should work and motivate his team. Qualities which a leader should possess is he should have the ability to listen, Analyze and influence. If any one of these is absent you cannot become a good leader. Great leaders are passionate people with positive energy and clarity of thoughts. A leader is a person who tries to get the best result from his team.
Then emphasis was laid on Goal setting. Its very truly said " A Journey of a Thousand Miles starts with a single step".
A very nice saying really moved me " The size of the Sky depends on the size of the window". There are various factors which prevents a person from setting a goal.
Few are - 1) Pessimism 2) Fear of Failure 3) Lack of Ambition 4) Procrastination 5) Low Self Esteem and finally 6) Ignorance
There are various types of Goal -
1) Work Goal
2) Hobby Goal
3) social Goal
4) study Goal
5) Material Goal
6) Personal Goal
7) Interpersonal Relationship Goal
8) Health Goal
Once goals are set and classified. It needs to be implemented with great determination for getting success. Always set a SMART Goal. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time oriented Goal. Goals should be subdivided so that achieving them becomes a pleasure and we are not burdened by it. Have hope when you get failures while traveling through a path to achieve your Goal. A leader excels in Motivating, Communicating and maintaining good Public Relations. A Great leader is a good Listener. Napoleon very correctly said " A leader is a dealer in hope". A leader empowers others. They have the ability to stay Calm under pressure. A leader motivates himself by improving himself daily and overcoming his weaknesses. A leader possesses good speaking, writing & listening skills along with Brevity, Humility and Empathy.
After learning about leader, Leadership, goal and Goal setting came a very technical part i.e the Parliamentarian part.
We learnt styles of Chairman -
1) Autocratic
2) Democratic
3) Laissez Faire
4) charismatic
Most successful chairman is one who follows all the four styles. Then we learned various qualities of Chairman which i felt were similar to a leader. We were then made familiar with duties and Parliamentarian powers of Chairman. Rules are laid down to maintain discipline in the meeting.
Jagdish Sir briefed us on types of members and he shared secret on how to motivate them to work.
Types of members -
1) Quarrelsome
2) Positive
3) Know All
4) Stalker
5) Uncooperative
6) Thick Skinned
7) Over Talkative
8) High Brow
9) Silent
A good leader is one who gets the work done by managing all team members.
We were taught about the need to have a meeting and various types of Meetings -
1) Problem solving
2) Decision making
3) Planning
4) Reporting & Presenting
5) Evaluating
We were shown various clipse's on types of meeting. We were taught about Quorum and necessity to lay an Agenda. Then types of Motion i.e Main, Subsidiary, privilege and Incidental. Session was also held on Important Motions, code of Conduct for a meeting and about an active member who follows all rules and regulations and participates in every meeting.
Two days LAP programme was really interesting. At the end of session when we had to part. It was a sad moment but we had a hope that we all will meet again. Sweet memories of LAP and showers of rains are still fresh in my memory.
